The definition of a “mori girl” is a young woman who seems to be in a forest. “Mori” means forest in Japanese. Mori girls are all members of a community on Mixi. Mixi is an Internet social networking service in Japan, which has been operating since 2004. The community was started by a young woman whose Mixi user name is ‘choco’. A friend of hers remarked to her that because of the clothes she wears, she seems to be in a forest. If a woman wants to join the mori girl community, she first has to get permission from choco. Applicants have to answer some questions to be approved. The questions are very simple, and they are relate to mori girls, in general, and also the rules of the community.
There are more than 60 different categories of mori girl in the community. For example, some like loose one-piece dresses, and others wear many layers of clothing.
The “mori girl” trend is hard to explain, as it is resembles other fashion styles. However, the image of mori girls can be seen in other ways. They have the same tastes in many things, and usually go to used-clothing and antique stores in Shimokitazawa, Koenji and Dikanyama. In addition, they are interested in cafe tours, reading, handicrafts and taking photographs. You can get an image of a mori girl not only from their appearance, but also from their interests.
Mori girls have had a major impact on Japanese women, and have been featured in lots of women’s magazines, and on TV. As a result, mori girls have become trendy, and their fashions have become very popular.
